SCIENCE ON A SPHERE(SOS)

"Science on a Sphere" - a new facility added to Regional Science Centre, Guwahati.It provides the earth‘s dynamic environmental processes as well as the view of celestial objects with digital simulation.

Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Assam inaugurated the new facility on 15th March, 2018 in presence of Shri KeshabMahanta, Minister and Additional Chief Secretary. Dept. of S&T. Govt. of Assam, and other dignitaries.

How does the Earth look from outer space? Have you ever seen the earth from the space?

It is a luminous globe about 6 ft. in diameter suspended from the ceiling. The surface of which allows projected moving images to wrap around it. There are more than 500 datasets used by the system out of which around 50 are real time. The datasets in the system are obtained from the satellites and are constantly updated to present the latest atmospheric status on Earth.

The installed system draws its data collected by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) & National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration(NOAA) of USA from a band of satellites moving above our planet. The data thus collected is converted into images and are wrapped over the sphere in quick succession thereby generating a feel of real dynamic Earth system. In fact, why only Earth, it can also display the surface of the Sun, Moon, planets or the celestial globe. This vast database is a storehouse of knowledge and the demonstrations attempt to propagate better understanding of our fragile planet. This digital visualization technology was originally developed by the NOAA as a way to explore environmental data using new visualization techniques.
