About Us

National Science Centre, Guwahati — popularly known as the Science Museum — is one of the units of the National Council of Science Museums (NCSM), functioning under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. Its primary objective is to popularize science among the people of the region.

Since its inauguration on March 15, 1994, the Centre has been a major attraction for students, teachers, and the general public. It serves as a dynamic platform for learning science through interaction and fun-based experiences.

Formerly known as the Regional Science Centre, Guwahati, it holds the distinction of being the first science centre in Northeast India. It was inaugurated by the then Chief Minister of Assam, Late Hiteswar Saikia, though its educational activities for students and teachers had already begun in 1990, well before the formal inauguration.

In recognition of its growing role and impact, the Centre was officially upgraded to national level on 7th January, 2024 and subsequently renamed as the National Science Centre, Guwahati. The Centre features several permanent galleries with participatory exhibits that make science accessible and engaging. In addition to its exhibitions, it conducts a wide range of educational programs and activities, especially for students, aiming to foster a scientific temper and impart science education in a non-formal and interactive manner.

The Centre also houses an Innovation Hub, where students can take annual memberships and work on creative projects during weekends under the guidance of expert mentors.
